What is a Midwife?

Simply put, midwife means "with woman." As midwives, we believe that our place is with women, providing information, giving support, and helping women make informed decisions about their individual care.

Our strength lies in our ability to treat women's health, including childbirth, as a normal, natural part of life. We believe in evidence-based care and avoiding interventions when possible. To schedule an appointment at Plano Birthplace, please fill out our form.

Jeannine Tate MSN, APRN, CNM

Privileges at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas

Having birthed two of her children with midwives, Jeannine felt safe, supported, and empowered. The midwives’ wonderful compassionate care left her with a desire to become a midwife. She wanted to help other woman have an empowering birth experience like her own.

Jeannine obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University.

Working as a nurse both in hospital L&D units, and a freestanding birth center for over 10 years, Jeannine was privileged to be a part of over 2,000 labor and delivery experiences. As an L&D nurse, she witnessed firsthand the positive outcomes that occurred when midwives were the providers. Midwives provided safe, best evidenced-based care of women and their babies, while simultaneously ensuring women birthed with dignity and respect with minimal medical interventions. Birth was honored and women were empowered and pleased with their birth experience.

Jeannine went back to school and obtained her Master of Science in Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University in 2015. Now as a Certified Nurse Midwife, Jeannine’s philosophy is based on providing the safest, best, evidence-based care that also values and respects women, labor, and the birthing process. As a midwife, Jeannine respects and has confidence in women and their capabilities during childbirth. In 2017, she opened the first birth center in Plano, TX: Plano Birthplace. She offers respectful, anticipatory, flexible care for women and their families in the community. Midwifery care takes place in partnership with women, recognizing the right to self-determination, and is based on providing supportive care that is respectful, personalized, continuous and non-authoritarian. Research has shown midwifery-led care, centered on supportive relationships has proven to significantly improve women’s overall health, birth outcomes and maternal satisfaction.

He is a masterfully skilled, meticulous surgeon that is able to calmly, proficiently handle complex high-risk problems. He is by far the best surgeon I have had the privilege of working with in my career. I have accompanied Dr. Fogwell on several mission trips to Guatemala. While on these life-changing medical mission trips, I have watched Dr. Fogwell generously give of his time and expertise to bring much needed medical treatment to women in need of surgical care. He is an expert on taking care of women and continues to stay up to date on the latest research about medications and evidenced based care. Having such an expert on my collaborative team allows me to continue to give top notch evidence-based care that helps to keep my clients safe and well. I have won the collaborating physician lottery with Dr. Fogwell on my team.

Ted E. Fogwell, MD, is our collaborating physician and sponsoring physician at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. My relationship with him allows me to continue to take care of my clients safely whether they give birth at the birth center or at the hospital.

As part of his overall care, Dr. Fogwell provides for his patients a warm, friendly environment. He states, "I work with my patients to develop an individualized treatment. My focus is patient-first, and my goal is always optimal health for my patients. I believe trust and honesty are key elements in the patient-physician relationship, and I work closely with my patients to keep them well."

Most of our clients at Plano Birthplace will remain low risk and not require any direct contact with our collaborating physician. However, rest assured that I am working behind the scenes with him to ensure if anything arises in your care that requires medical intervention I can and will continue to provide you the best evidenced-based care. I meet monthly and discuss any issues that arise that may require collaboration or co-management. I rely on his experience and expertise to help insure that if something occurs that requires medical interventions we are able to do what is best for you and your baby. He will become involved only if there is something that requires his medical expertise. If you birth at the hospital you will most likely meet him, as he may be involved in your care.
